Dustin’s songs these days come straight outta the heart and rooted from the non-profit he kicked off with some fellow drifters lookin’ for something real. Him and his band of rock 'n' roll lifers jump from songs about faith and being faithless to heartbreak, hard-lovin’, and nights drinking with friends ‘til sunrise.
“Preachin’ is the family business,” Dustin says. “My dad’s a pastor, my granddads were traveling evangelists, and half a dozen of my kin work in the Baptist church. But I’ve had a hard time with that. Truth is, Jesus ain’t the problem—it’s all the churchy folk with their judgmental looks, nutty rules, and lives that just feel cold and empty, like they don’t care much about what other people feel about Jesus... or anything else, for that matter. Seems like if you don’t nod along, you’re just flat-out wrong and ‘beneath’ them. Feels like the exact opposite of what Jesus was all about.”
To break from his roots, Dustin writes songs that wander between the holy and the hard-livin’. He doesn’t shy away from life’s rough edges, instead settling into a rowdy groove he calls Southern Fried Rock—a fiery mix of rock 'n' roll, blues, and country.
Rock 'n' roll might be his staple sound, but he’s got his own rules: “I write songs about whatever I damn well please—the good, the bad, and the ugly. I’ve hidden the real me before, outta shame or fear. That life’s exhausting. Now, I don’t write to check boxes or play it ‘safe’ for a hit. I just share the story, as raw as it comes. At the end of the day, I’m a storyteller. Doesn’t matter where people find my music or what genre folks pin on it, Hell, I spent over a decade writing Christian music for mega-churches, but now, I’m just writin’ what I feel. I’ve fallen back in love with music—raw, real, unscripted rock 'n' roll. I've been doin' it for a while...but feels like I’m just getting started.”
**Storytellers, Inc.** is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a simple mission: *bringing reckless love to unexpected places.*
We foster hope for those struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts and embrace doubters, skeptics, and those hurt by past religious experiences. Our goal is to offer a safe space to explore faith beyond church walls.
